TAKE THE STAND – Against Family Violence.

A conference panel discussion brought to you by Safe-T-Card

Family Violence and its impact on the community

Safe-T-card  & ACSO are bringing together a panel of experts as part of the 8th ACSO International Criminal Justice Conference to discuss the impact of family violence on our community.

Joanna Fletcher ( CEO, Women’s Legal Service ) will host the panel discussion with the following confirmed special guests:  Jacqui Watt ( CEO, No to Violence ), Dr Leigh Gassner (Director REOS Partners), Phil Cleary (Victims Rights Advocate and Author), Elena Campbell (Centre for Innovative Justice, RMIT), Assistant Commissioner Dean McWhirter (Victoria Police), Deputy Magistrate Felicity Broughton (Magistrates’ Court Victoria),

Attendees to this panel are invited to get involved in a debate and discussion concerning the following issues:

  • Do we take an approach that focuses on the rights of the victim, or on the perpetrator’s right to treatment and rehabilitation? Can we focus on one without the other?
  • Is it enough to react to instances of family violence? Are there any preventative measures that we as a community can take?
  • Are rates of family violence increasing, or are we just becoming more aware of, and willing to intervene with family violence?

Should Victoria instate mandatory reporting of family violence?
